XC60 B5 or plug-in hybrid: which is right for me?

Short answer
Can you charge at home and drive mostly around town? The T8 Plug-in Hybrid gives you up to 35 silent electric miles a day and 401 hp. Long commutes, no home charging, or watching the budget? The B5 starts at $51,095, tows the same 3,500 pounds, and never needs to be plugged in.

What does it cost to fuel each one?

An example to make the decision concrete: 12,000 miles a year, gas at $4.50 a gallon and home electricity at $0.18 per kWh. For the plug-in hybrid we assume about 7,500 of those miles are electric, which takes charging most nights. Your numbers will differ.

Powertrain How it's driven Est. energy cost / year
XC60 B5 Gas, 26 mpg $2,077
Plug-in hybrid, charged nightly 7,500 electric miles + 4,500 gas miles $1,358
Plug-in hybrid, rarely charged Gas, 29 mpg $1,862
Is the plug-in hybrid worth it?
If you can plug in at home, it's the XC60 to drive. Power: up to 401 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque, versus 247 hp in the B5. Acceleration: 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds, nearly two seconds quicker, with instant electric torque for merging onto Highway 217 or passing on US-26. Electric commuting: up to 35 silent, gas-free miles a day, enough for most Beaverton-to-Portland round trips. Driving experience: smooth, quiet and effortless around town, with the engine stepping in only when you need it. Charge most nights and you'll rarely need a gas station.

Quick decision guide: if you…

If you… Look at
Want the XC60 at the lowest price B5 Core: Google built-in, panoramic roof and adaptive cruise are standard.
Drive I-5 or US-26 every day B5 Plus for Pilot Assist, which adds steering assistance to adaptive cruise.
Have a garage and a short commute T8 Plug-in Hybrid Plus for up to 35 electric miles a day.
Want the most performance T8 Plug-in Hybrid: 401 hp and 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds.
Need a third row Step up to the XC90, also offered as a mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid.
Our honest take
The B5 Plus is the XC60 most of our customers should buy: refined, well-equipped and simple to own. The plug-in hybrid is the better car to drive, quicker and quieter around town, and it makes the most sense when you can plug in at home most nights.
02  ·  Will it fit my life?

Real-world fit: charging, cargo, car seats & towing

Here are straight answers to the practical questions XC60 shoppers ask us most.

Plug-in hybrid
Can I live with a plug-in hybrid without a home charger?
Yes, but you'll miss most of the benefit. A standard outlet refills the battery overnight or longer, and public Level 2 chargers work too. Without regular charging, the plug-in hybrid runs as a 29-mpg hybrid. That's still better than the B5's 26 mpg, but plugging in is what unlocks its electric commuting.
Families
Does it fit car seats?
Yes. Rear legroom is 38 inches, and LATCH anchors are standard. Volvo also offers integrated booster seats built into the rear bench for older kids. Bring your car seats and install them on our lot before you buy.
Vehicle fit
Do I lose cargo space with the plug-in hybrid?
Hardly any. Volvo lists 21.6 cubic feet behind the rear seat in the B5 and 21.1 in the plug-in hybrid, and both fold to 54.5. A ski pass-through lets you carry long items with passengers in back.
Utility
Can it tow?
Both powertrains tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped, enough for a small camping trailer, jet skis or a utility trailer. The plug-in hybrid's extra torque makes hills easier.
Pacific Northwest
Is it good for Mount Hood and winter trips?
All-wheel drive is standard on every XC60. Tires still matter most: consider all-weather or winter tires, check ODOT TripCheck and carry chains or traction devices when signs require them. Cold weather reduces electric range, so expect fewer electric miles in January.
Vehicle fit
Will it fit in my garage?
The XC60 is 185.4 inches long, about 65 inches tall and 83.3 inches wide with mirrors. If you're adding a Level 2 charger, plan for a 240-volt circuit near where you park.

How the XC60's key features work

These are the features XC60 owners ask us to demonstrate most, and how to use them.

Charging and driving the plug-in hybrid

1
Plug in at home
Use a 240-volt Level 2 wallbox for a full charge in about 3 to 5 hours, or a standard outlet overnight. Schedule charging in the Volvo Cars app to use off-peak electricity rates.
2
Drive in Pure mode
With a charged battery, Pure mode keeps you on electric power for up to 35 miles, covering most school runs and commutes.
3
Let Hybrid mode take over
Once the battery runs low, the XC60 automatically blends gas and electric power. You never need to charge to keep driving.
4
Save charge for later
On a road trip, hold battery charge for city driving at the end, where electric miles count most.
5
Precondition the cabin
Warm or cool the cabin from the Volvo Cars app while you're still plugged in, saving battery on cold Oregon mornings.

More features we demo every day

Plug your phone into the USB-C port. They're wired, not wireless, and you can switch between them and Google built-in anytime.
Plus and Ultra
Pilot Assist
Adds steering assistance to adaptive cruise to help keep you centered in your lane on the highway. Keep your hands on the wheel; it's a driver aid, not self-driving.
Plus and Ultra
360° camera
A bird's-eye view of the car makes tight Pearl District parking and narrow garages much easier.
Ultra
Head-up display
Projects speed, navigation and safety alerts onto the windshield in your line of sight.
Available
Integrated booster seats
Fold-out boosters built into the rear seat, so older kids ride safely without a separate booster.

What to expect at Herzog-Meier Volvo Cars

Buying a Volvo should feel as calm as driving one. Here is how each step works at our Beaverton store at 4180 SW 141st Ave, serving Beaverton, Portland, Hillsboro and Tigard since 1957. Se habla español.

Test drive
What happens on a test drive?
We start by asking how you'll use the car, then match you to a powertrain and trim. We'll set up your seat and connect your phone, and you'll drive a route that mixes Canyon Road traffic with a Highway 26 merge. Most XC60 shoppers drive the B5 and the plug-in hybrid back to back in the same visit, and we'll show you how charging works. Bring your driver's license.
Trade-in
How long does a trade-in take?
An in-person appraisal usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including a walkaround and a short drive. Bring your title or loan payoff information, both keys and any service records.
Delivery day
What should I expect at delivery?
After paperwork, our technology delivery specialist walks you through your XC60: your Volvo ID and the Volvo Cars app, Google built-in sign-in, phone connection, Pilot Assist (where equipped) and, on the plug-in hybrid, charging, drive modes and scheduled charging. Bring your license, proof of insurance and any financing or trade-in documents.
Service
What are service visits like?
Our Volvo factory-trained technicians use genuine Volvo parts, offer online scheduling, and service both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. Ask about Volvo Concierge pickup and delivery for qualifying appointments.

Living with a 2027 XC60

Question Answer
What mileage will I get? B5: EPA 24 / 29 / 26 mpg (city / highway / combined). Plug-in hybrid: 69 MPGe, 29 mpg combined on gas and up to 35 electric miles.
How far can I go? The B5 carries 18.8 gallons, about 490 miles. The plug-in hybrid's EPA total range is up to 580 miles.
What maintenance is included? Complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance for 2 years or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first.
What warranty do I get? 4-year/50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty. Plug-in hybrid batteries are covered for at least 8 years/100,000 miles; ask us for the Oregon terms.
What does Google built-in cost after year four? The digital services package is included for four years; after that, new terms and fees apply if you renew.
Is there a tax credit for the plug-in hybrid? Not anymore. The federal credit for purchased plug-in vehicles ended September 30, 2025. Ask about current Volvo lease and finance offers.
How much does service cost? It depends on the mileage interval. Call our service team at 503-855-6747 for an exact quote.

Ownership tips from our service drive

Install a Level 2 charger first
A 240-volt wallbox turns the plug-in hybrid into an electric commuter. Have an electrician check your panel before delivery day.
Use your electric miles
Plug-in hybrids that rarely charge burn more fuel and cost more to own. Plug in most nights to get what you paid for.
Think about tires before November
All-wheel drive helps you go; tires help you stop and turn. Large 20- and 22-inch wheels look great but are more exposed to Portland potholes.
Keep a service record
Servicing at a Volvo retailer keeps a documented history, which supports warranty coverage and resale value.

Common misconceptions

What people assume What's actually true
“The B5 mild hybrid can drive on electricity.” It can't. Its 48-volt system only assists the engine. Only the T8 Plug-in Hybrid drives on electric power alone.
“A plug-in hybrid stops if you don't charge it.” It doesn't. It simply runs as a regular hybrid, rated 29 mpg combined.
“The plug-in hybrid gives up cargo space.” Only about half a cubic foot behind the rear seat, per Volvo.
“Plug-in hybrids can't tow.” Both XC60 powertrains are rated for up to 3,500 pounds.
“The plug-in hybrid still gets a federal tax credit.” That credit ended September 30, 2025. Ask about current Volvo lease and finance offers instead.
“Apple CarPlay is wireless.” In the XC60 it connects by USB-C cable. Google built-in is standard and runs without a phone.

2027 Volvo XC60 FAQ

Select any question to see the answer.

The 2027 Volvo XC60 B5 starts at $51,095 for the Core trim, $56,295 for Plus and $61,045 for Ultra. The XC60 T8 Plug-in Hybrid starts at $67,595 (Plus) and $72,345 (Ultra). These starting MSRPs include Volvo's $1,395 destination charge and exclude taxes, title, license and retailer fees. Call Herzog-Meier Volvo Cars at 503-831-9559 for current Beaverton pricing and offers.
The XC60 B5 is a mild hybrid: a 247-horsepower turbocharged engine with a 48-volt system that assists the engine but cannot drive on electricity alone. The XC60 T8 Plug-in Hybrid adds an 18.8 kWh battery you charge from the wall, drives up to 35 miles on electricity alone (EPA), and makes up to 401 horsepower combined. The plug-in hybrid is quicker (0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds vs. 6.5) and more efficient.
If you can charge at home, yes. The XC60 T8 Plug-in Hybrid makes up to 401 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque versus 247 horsepower in the B5, and it reaches 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, nearly two seconds quicker. It drives up to 35 miles on electricity alone, enough for most daily commutes, so with nightly charging you may rarely buy gas. Around town it's quieter and smoother than the B5, with instant electric torque for merging and passing.
No. The XC60 B5's 48-volt mild-hybrid system helps the engine start smoothly and recovers energy when braking, but it cannot power the car on its own and never needs to be plugged in. Only the XC60 T8 Plug-in Hybrid drives on electricity alone, for up to 35 miles.
The 2027 XC60 T8 Plug-in Hybrid has an EPA-estimated electric range of up to 35 miles, enough for most Beaverton-to-Portland commutes. When the battery is depleted it drives as a regular hybrid, rated 29 mpg combined, with an EPA-estimated total range of up to 580 miles.
The XC60 T8 Plug-in Hybrid's 18.8 kWh battery charges fully in about 3 to 5 hours on a Level 2 (240-volt) home or public charger, depending on the charger. On a standard 120-volt household outlet, plan on charging overnight or longer. It does not support DC fast charging, and reviewers note its onboard charger is slower than some rivals'.
EPA estimates for the 2027 Volvo XC60 B5 AWD are 24 city / 29 highway / 26 combined mpg. The XC60 T8 Plug-in Hybrid is rated 69 MPGe combined using electricity and gas, and 29 mpg combined running on gas alone.
Both the 2027 XC60 B5 and the XC60 T8 Plug-in Hybrid are rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.
Barely. Volvo lists 21.6 cubic feet behind the rear seat in the B5 and 21.1 cubic feet in the plug-in hybrid, and 54.5 cubic feet with the rear seat folded in both. The battery sits in the center tunnel, so it doesn't take over the cargo floor.
No. The federal clean-vehicle tax credit for purchased plug-in hybrids and EVs ended on September 30, 2025. Ask Herzog-Meier Volvo Cars about current Volvo lease and finance offers instead.
For most buyers, the XC60 B5 Plus ($56,295) is the best value: it adds Pilot Assist, a 360-degree camera and Harman Kardon audio over the Core. Choose the Ultra for a head-up display and the most luxurious interior. If you can charge at home, the T8 Plug-in Hybrid starts at the Plus level, so compare the B5 Plus and T8 Plus side by side.
Yes. Every 2027 XC60 has Google built-in on an 11.2-inch touchscreen, with Google Maps, Google Assistant and apps from Google Play included through a four-year digital services package. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect through a USB-C cable; they are not wireless.
The XC60 earned Good ratings in the IIHS small overlap and updated moderate overlap front crash tests, though it does not currently hold an IIHS Top Safety Pick award. Every 2027 XC60 includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist and large-animal detection, blind spot information, lane keeping assistance, rear automatic braking, front and rear parking sensors and adaptive cruise control. Pilot Assist and a 360-degree camera are added on Plus and Ultra trims.
Yes. Every 2027 XC60 has all-wheel drive, and the plug-in hybrid uses an electric motor to drive the rear wheels. For Mount Hood and winter trips, good all-weather or winter tires matter most; check ODOT TripCheck and carry chains or traction devices when signs require them.
The 2027 Volvo XC60 includes a 4-year/50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty and Complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance for 2 years or 20,000 miles. The plug-in hybrid's battery is covered for at least 8 years/100,000 miles; ask us for the exact terms in Oregon.
If you want a fully electric SUV and can charge at home, the EX60 is worth a look. If you take road trips without planning around chargers or want the lowest price, the XC60 B5 or plug-in hybrid fits better today. Our team can walk you through all three.
A product specialist helps you narrow down the right powertrain and trim, sets up the seat and connects your phone, and then you drive a route that mixes city traffic with highway merging. Most XC60 shoppers drive the B5 and the plug-in hybrid back to back in the same visit. Bring your driver's license.
An in-person trade-in appraisal at Herzog-Meier Volvo Cars usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including a walkaround and short drive. Bring your title or loan payoff information, both keys, and any service records to speed things up.
